Katja Herbers has been a professional performer since she was a small girl. She is the daughter of Vera Beths (violinist) and Werner Herbers (oboist). When she was a child She traveled with her mother in America for a tour with the chamber music group L'Archibudelli. Her mother remarried cellist Anner Bylsma and her father remarried costume designer Leonie Poliak, who introduced her to the stage. While growing up she had an au pair who was from Canada. Her mother taught her Dutch German English. Herbers attended the Ignatius Gymnasium, in Amsterdam. She studied Psychology in The University of Amsterdam. In the course of her studies in psychology, she was a student at the theater college De Trap. Then she moved to New York and went to the HB Studio. The school accepted her to the Theaterschool Amsterdam. She was in Pietje Bell, and Brush with Fate while studying. Following graduation, Herbers was a part of the Johan Simons Theater Company NTGent in Ghent. Herbers joined Germany's Munich Kammerspiele.
